2007
Cannonball 2007 was eight days, 35 motorbike riders and roads that are roads in name only… The annual Cannonball Charity Ride tested ability at any level and fed desire for an off-road adventure - all for a great cause.
This year began in Mount Isa on Saturday 5 May 2007, the ride travelling through spectacular national park scenery, receiving an enthusiastic welcome in small towns along the way. There were overnight stops near Gregory Downs, Hells Gate, Bourketown, Normanton, Kurumba, Myola and Cloncurry, with a rest and fishing day as the ride approached the Gulf of Carpenteria, before returning to Mount Isa on Saturday 12 May 2007.
For the participants, it was an arrive-and-ride exercise. Logistics are up to the organisers, and the only expense for riders is the servicing of bikes, and drinks. This is intended so the riders will get the most out of the expedition, without the organisational burdens.
The entry fee included everything else: fuel, generous meals, fishing trip, camping fees, one night’s motel accommodation, luggage vehicle, gorge tour, professional recovery, and emergency teams.
The ride itself was an experience to remember: traversing through the best country north-west Queensland has to offer and experiencing the camaraderie of fellow riders and the friendship of the locals along the way; nights around a camp fire under a canopy of stars.
Proceeds raised through the event went to the Endeavour Foundation, a Queensland-based not-for-profit organisation devoted to providing independence to people with a disability, through provision of employment, education, accommodation, and more.
